mokuga 木画

Wood picture. Also called mokue 木絵. A technique of wood decoration, called hirazougan 平象嵌 (flat inlay) in ancient times, and similar to mokuzougan 木象嵌 (wood inlay) using ivory, horn or bamboo. There are several types of mokuga, mokuji 木地 (wood grain); kika kouseimon 幾何構成文 (geometrically constructed) using *ichimatsu 市松 (checkered patterns), yabanemon 矢羽根文 (arrow feather pattern) or yahazumon 矢筈文 (herringbone pattern); and kaiga 絵画 (pictorial) for representing birds and flowers.
