mizuki 水城

Lit. water fortification. A dike constructed in the low-lying land between two mountains and filled with water to create a large moat to defend against an attacking enemy. The term appears in the NIHONSHOKI 日本書紀 (Chronicles of Japan; early 8c.) in reference to the mizuki constructed for the defense of Dazaifu 大宰府 in 664, Fukuoka prefecture.
