mawashijiki 回敷

Also called oimawashijiki 追回敷. The placement of straw mats *tatami 畳, such that they run lengthwise along a room's wall and along the threshhold of the entrance to the room. This is done to avoid the junction of two mats in front of the entrance. An arrangement of this type is common in rooms of eight or ten mats.
