morishitagami 森下紙

Sometimes abbreviated to morishita 森下. Handmade paper *washi 和紙 made in Morishita 森下, Mino 美濃 province (Gifu prefecture). A thick, strong paper made of mulberry fibres (see *choshi 楮紙), used especially for making umbrellas, the production of which dates to the Muromachi period. Eventually, the term morishita came to denote paper used for umbrella making kasagami 傘紙. Morishita techniques spread to neighboring Mikawa 三河 province (Aichi prefecture) and the paper is still produced today.
