monohoshidai 物干し台

A railed timber platform built on the roofs of urban vernacular houses *machiya 町家, in heavily built-up areas of large Edo period cities as a place for drying washing and airing bedding. The rooftop ensured plentiful sunshine which rarely penetrated the small enclosed courtyards below.
