mondai-ishi 門台石

Lit. gate foundation stones. A large, flat stepping stone *yaku-shi 役石 placed under *sarudo 猿戸 or *kido 木戸 types of middle gate *chuuimon 中門 in tea gardens *roji 露地. Also called tozuri-ishi 戸摺石 (door rubbing stone), it often replaces the host stone teishu-ishi 亭主石, guest stone *kyaku-ishi 客石, and gate crossing stone *norigoe-ishi 乗越石, usually employed under middle gates.
