mimi-ishi 耳石
KEY WORD : architecture / general terms
 
Lit. ear stone. Also called sode-ishi 袖石, tsuma-ishi 妻石. Stone string or stringer. Stones placed along the incline of steps leading to a podium *kidan 基壇. They not only form a neat edging but also keep the stone steps in place.
