KEY WORD :@architecture / roofing tiles
@
Filler or gap-fill tiles used to close or plug the openings along the base of the main ridge *oomune ‘哏, the corner ridge *sumikudarimune ‹χ~“, and various types of descending ridges *kudarimune ~“. Gaps are created where the broad, concave roof tiles *hiragawara •½Š’ and the semi-cylindrical tiles *marugawara ŠΫŠ’, meet the ridge. There are two types of filler tile: The *kanimendo gawara ŠI–ΚŒΛŠ’ is used to fill the relatively symmetrical gap made under the main ridge. The tile used to fill the asymmetrical gap below the corner descending ridge, is called corner gap filler *sumimendo gawara ‹χ–ΚŒΛŠ’. The latter filler tile and those used below the kudarimune are sometimes called katsuo mendo Œ˜‹›–ΚŒΛ or katsuo mendogawara Œ˜‹›–ΚŒΛŠ’ (bonito filler tile).
