mazegaki 交垣

Lit. mixed hedge. One type of *ikegaki 生垣 (living fence) in which two or more plants are planted together. Typically plants with different coloration and texture are combined to create visual variety. In some cases one type of plant is low and dense, while a taller and thinner plant is placed behind it to make a two-step visual arrangement.
