marubori 丸彫

A statue completely carved in the round, as opposed to relief *ukibori 浮彫. A marubori statue can be viewed from any direction; however, the viewing of many of the earliest statues was restricted to certain angles. A statue which is carved to be viewed only from the front, the back being roughly finished, is known as *shoumen kanshousei 正面観照性.
