manmousou 縵網相
KEY WORD : art history / sculptures

Also shusokushi manmousou 手足指縵網相. A web-like membrane between the fingers and toes found on sculpted Buddhist images. One of the 32 characteristics of Buddha *sanjuunisou 三十二相, and seen on *nyorai 如来 and *bosatsu 菩薩 images. For example, manmousou can be clearly seen on the raised right hand of the Shaka nyoraizou 釈迦如来像 in Kanimanji 蟹満寺 (bronze, late 7c), Kyoto. In wooden statues of the Heian period, this membrane was often carved in very fine fretwork.
