makibashira 巻柱

Pillars that are decorated with ornamental bands. The bands may be made of metal, painted with lacquer or covered with various colors, gold, or silver dust *makie 蒔絵. One band may include more than one technique. Pillars around the inner sanctuary *naijin 内陣 of *amidadou 阿弥陀堂, are frequently lavishly decorated. Example: Chuusonji *Konjikidou 中尊寺金色堂 (1124), Iwate prefecture.
