kyouninkei 杏仁形

Lit. apricot-kernel shape. This term refers to the eyes of Buddhist statues, which are wide open in the shape of an apricot stone. The upper and lower lids are clearly delineated, arc-shaped, and equal in length. Kyouninkei eyes are found on statues from the Wei dynasty in China and the Asuka period in Japan. An example is the *Guze Kannon 救世観音 in Houryuuji *Yumedono 法隆寺夢殿, Nara.
