Also called sakaguma 反隈 or teriguma 照隈, lit. highlighting. Reverse shading. A shading *kumadori 隈取 technique used in Japanese painting. It was most popular in Heian-period Buddhist painting. White pigment or shell-white *gofun 胡粉, bright-colored pigments, or gold or silver paint kingindei 金銀泥 were applied alongside areas of darker color to produce a highlighted effect.
