kumiko 組子

1 A muntin, mullion or munnion. The non-structural timber parts set within the stiles *kamachi 框, of doors or windows. Also used for the vertical and horizontal thin lightweight members that fill the frame of a sliding door *shouji 障子. The shouji effect is achieved by pasting thin translucent paper over the back of the frame and muntins. See *fusuma 襖.

2 Strips of thin wooden lattice positioned vertically and horizontally to make latticework used in gable pediments or sliding screens; also used to divide the inner sanctuary *naijin 内陣, from the worshippers area *gejin 外陣 of a shrine or temple.
