1 Also written 梔子. Reddish-yellow colour and dye. Made from chopped, boiled seeds of the kuchinashi tree (Gardenia Jasminoides) which grows in western and southern Japan. Dyed together with safflower *beni 紅, kuchinashi produces a deep yellow colour *outan 黄丹, which is the designated colour for the robes of a crown prince.
