koukyaku 光脚

Also koukyakubu 光脚部, *ukebana 受花. A part of the nimbus *kouhai 光背 on a Buddhist image. The koukyaku is the lowest section, forming a horizontal base which supports the nimbus. Designs made up of a series of lotus petals, leaves, or sea grass *soumon 藻文 are common. A good example can be seen on the Yakushi nyoraizou 薬師如来像 (8-9c) in Shoujouji 勝常寺, Fukushima prefecture.
