kongou houza 金剛宝座

Also kongouza 金剛座. Lit. diamond throne. The throne on which the historical Buddha (*Shaka 釈迦) meditated and reached enlightenment. A stone pedestal (approx. 2.5mx1.5m) dating from 2-1c BCE that is preserved at Buddhagaya in India. In Japan the term kongou houza is sometimes used more generally for the pedestal or dais on which a Buddhist image is placed (*daiza 台座).
