Steps made of thick, heavy , square or rectangular timbers cut with their ends exposed. One step is called dangi 段木 and is cut along the grain. Sometimes the tread dan-ita 段板, has a thick board as a facing. Steps of this type are common especially at shrine or temples. Example: Kumano Jinja Honden 熊野神社本殿 (c.1480) in Yamanashi prefecture.
