kiwame-in 極印

1 Lit. examined seal: i.e. seal of examination. A small round censorship seal containing the character 'kiwame 極' (examined) which was supposed to appear on all woodblock prints *ukiyo-e 浮世絵 issued during the period 1791-1842 (between the Kansei 寛政 reforms and the Tenpou 天保 reforms), to indicate that they had passed inspection by officials gyouji 行事 of the office of the Edo City Magistrate machibugyou 町奉行. See *aratame-in 改印.

2 A seal impressed onto the authentication certificate *origami 折紙 or aratamefuda 改札 often found with a painting or a work of calligraphy.
