kishuu-ishi  紀州石

Lit. Kishuu stones. A type of blue stone *ao-ishi 青石, quarried in the region known as Wakayama prefecture. Because of the proximity of the Kii 紀伊 area to Kyoto, these high quality stones were favored in Kyoto gardens. They were used from the Muromachi period onward.
