kiridooshi 切通

A road, or entrance, that is constructed by cutting through mountainous or hilly terrain, leaving sharply hewed vertical cliffs *kirigishi 切岸, in order to facilitate passage to and from a castle or town. Well known examples include the seven kiridooshi providing entrance from three different directions to and from the city of Kamakura, the only medieval planned city constructed under the Kamakura military authorities.
