A votive light offered to a Shinto or Buddhist deity. The lantern which holds the votive light is called a *tourou 灯籠. Two of the oldest extant examples have been discovered in China; one at a temple in Shansi from the Tang dynasty and one in front of the old Han dynasty palace.
