kawaya
KEY WORD : architecture / general terms

A proto-modern, generic term for toilet. It is said that centuries ago such facilities were constructed above a swiftly flowing river so that the refuse would be washed away by the current. Also written 川屋 (river business) or 側屋 which may indicate that the toilet facilities were located beside a house.
