kawarajakuri 瓦决

Grooves made on roof timber, kawarazan 瓦桟, to prevent roof tiles from slipping. A wedge-shaped board *hirokomai 広小舞, is placed underneath the kawarajakuri and along the outer top surface of the rafters *taruki 垂木, for additional support. It extends slightly beyond the rafter ends.
