kattedoko 勝手床

Lit. kitchen alcove. Also teishudoko 亭主床. Sometimes called *gezadoko 下座床. An alcove, located behind or beside the host's mat *temaedatami 点前畳, in a tea ceremony room *chashitsu 茶室. Examples: Saihouji Shounantei 西芳寺湘南亭 in Kyoto, built by Sen Shouan 千少庵 (1546-1614); and Jikouin Chashitsu 慈光院茶室 in Nara, favored by Katagiri Sekishuu 片桐石州 (1605-73).
