kasa-ishi 笠石

Coping stones. A finish on the tops of fences and stone walls to protect them from weathering. Also used on the tops of the protruding base stones of some storehouses kura 蔵. The tops of coping stones used for these purposes usually slope slightly downward for water to drip off.
