kanazuchi 金槌
KEY WORD : architecture / tools

A carpenter's hammer with an iron head. It differs from the steel double faced hammer *gennou 玄能, in that one striking face has a flat, rectangular surface, and the other is sharply tapered. The kanazuchi is used principally for driving nails and clamps for pinioning. It is also used to flatten roofing and secure end roof tiles. The pointed head is used to mask the position of a nail hole.
