kakitsuke 掻きつけ
KEY WORD : architecture / gardens

Also written 垣つけ. A method of fence construction where vertical members *tateko 竪子, are fixed along horizontal members, one by one with rope. See *doubuchi 胴縁 or *oshibuchi 押縁. The same method is used when preparing a lath lattice as a groundwork for plastering. The best example of a kakitsuke fence can be seen at Kenninji 建仁寺 (1202) in Kyoto.
