kagariya 篝屋

Guardhouses for soldiers placed at street corners in Kyoto and Kamakura during the Kamakura period. The earliest known kagariya was built in Kyoto in 1238. Eventually there were forty-eight in Kyoto. They were simple 5×3 bay structures with boarded roofs. A fire was kept burning at night to provide light.
