kabewatadono 壁渡殿

Lit. walled bridge corridor. An archaic term for a type of corridor that connects two buildings in a Heian period aristocratic dwelling *shinden-zukuri 寝殿造. The corridor connected the central hall to the annex tainoya 対屋 as well as to other less important buildings in a complex plan. Kabewatadono were usually roofed with walls or hinged shutters *shitomido 蔀戸 on both sides.
