A wooden board or plank fence. Wooden fences made of planks and set directly into the ground are called hottate-itabei Œ@—§”•». Wooden fences that have boards joined directly to their base or foundation are called dodaisue-itabei “y‘䘔•». Some wooden fences are simply made of palings or pickets. *Genjibei Œ¹Ž•» is a board fence with posts set at intervals and a base runner set between the foundation stones of the posts. The boards are erected horizontally (if vertically, the fence is called tate-itabei c”•») with the top cut ends protected by a finishing cover board or top plate. The posts extend about one third above the height of the fencing in order to support a board roof with a ridge beam at the top. The space above the closed board fencing and below the roof, called a transom *ranma —“ŠÔ is left open. Thin square lath strips *tasuki æF set diagonally forming a criss-cross pattern in each transom add a decorative focal point. Sometimes the roof is made of tiles instead of boards. Yamatobei ‘å˜a•» is a fence made of widths of bleached bamboo spaced about 45cm apart and held in place by bark. This type of fence is used in a *sukiya ”Šñ‰® garden. Another type of yamatobei is made of wide vertical staggered boards, one facing front, the next facing back. The boards are separated and held in place with narrow horizontal boards. In some yamatobei type fences, the boards are set back-to-back instead of being staggered and a horizontal board is nailed along the top. The third type is called yamatouchi ‘å˜a‘Å and resembles a yamatobei type fence but has no horizontal coping, the front and back boards do not match and the horizontal boards are the same width as the spaces between the vertical boards. There are many other types of board fences.
