ichi-Fuji, ni-taka, san-nasubi 一富士二鷹三茄子
KEY WORD : art history / paintings

Lit. first: Mt Fuji, second: hawks, third: eggplant. A tradition which holds that these objects, seen in order in the first dream of the year augur good fortune. The origin of the legend is unknown. The idea was in wide circulation by the mid 18c, as evidenced in *ukiyo-e 浮世絵 painting and prints. There is no format for depicting the theme, and the elements are often depicted half-hidden within genre scenes of New Year's activities.
