Lit. thorn tree fortress. A simple and usually temporary fortress surrounded by thorn trees or briar bushes to defend it from attack. The term first appears in the Hitachi-no-kuni-no-fudoki 常陸の国風土記 (Hitachi Topography) dated early 8c, making it one of the earliest recorded examples of Japanese fortification.
