hidensho 秘伝書

Lit. secret hereditary writings. A manual which describes carpentry techniques developed by the master carpenters responsible for the construction of Japan's shrines and temples. Edo period hidensho, for example, record the closely guarded principles of the carpenter's working methods *SHOUMEI 匠明, giving detailed measurements for ground plans and vertical projections.
