henzai 辺材

Also called shirata 白太. Sapwood. The part of a tree trunk miki 幹, that is just beneath the bark juhi 樹皮. The material between the bark and the heartwood *shinzai 心材. Sapwood is generally less durable and more porous with a higher water content than heartwood. The year rings form in the sapwood which is the living part of the tree. It is softer and younger than heartwood and tends to warp and shrink if not well seasoned. It is lighter in color than heartwood. Depending on the species of tree when stripped of bark, it may have a whitish or light color.
