1 A simply constructed vernacular hut with earthfast posts *hottatebashira 掘立柱. The term is used in all regions of Japan.

2 In Hokkaidou 北海道 a rudimentary dwelling used by early pioneers in the latter part of the Edo period. It was a hut about 20sq.m. in area, with earthfast posts, a woven mat hung over the entry, and pine needles, matsuba 松葉, or bamboo grass, sasa 笹, spread on the earthen floor around the central hearth.
