Also houfukuzou –@•ž‘œ. Lit. portrait in religious (i.e. Buddhist) appearance. A portrait of a person who has taken Buddhist orders and wears Buddhist canonical robes. This term is used for an image of a person who has retired from secular life and entered the priesthood, but it is not used for the portrait of a priest who does not have a previous secular status. The painting by Goushin ‹M made in 1338 of the tonsured Emperor Hanazono ‰Τ‰€ (1297-1348) kept at Choufukuji ’·•ŸŽ› in Kyoto is a well-known example. In contrast, the term *zokutaizou ‘­‘Μ‘œ is applied to the portraits of lay people in formal secular dress.
