A method of color application in *yamato-e やまと絵, whereby the underdrawing in ink *sumi 墨 is not painted over, which preserves the vigor of the brush strokes. Often employed for the coloring of clothes in depictions of human figures. The opposite is *hiranuri 平塗, in which colors are applied completely over the sumi underdrawing .
