hanasogawara はなそ瓦
KEY WORD : architecture / roofing tiles

A semi-circular convex tile with a pendant *gatou 瓦当, attached to the peak of the gable to form the base around which a ridge-end ogre tile *onigawara 鬼瓦, fits. Actually, it is the uppermost hanging tile, kakemarugawara 掛丸瓦, that is below the teeth of the ogre tile. Example: the ogre tiles on the high gate Roumon 楼門 (1263-73) at Hannyaji 般若寺 in Nara.
