hakobutsu 箱仏
KEY WORD : art history / sculptures

A Buddhist image contained in a box-shaped miniature shrine. Two symmetrical rectangular wings flank a main image, carved in relief on a square or rectangular surface. The wings are carved with subsidiary images and attached on hinges; they can be opened out flat, or closed like doors to form a box. A good example is the shrine showing *Shaka 釈迦 and attendants in Itsukushima Jinja 厳島神社, Hiroshima prefecture.
