gouma 格間
KEY WORD : architecture / general terms

The space created by the coffers or ribs *goubuchi 格縁, of a coffered or latticed ceiling. The ribs are set securely in place, with panel boards, gou-ita 格板, that are then laid over them and are attached to the top surface. The panels are often vividly decorated with stylized floral patterns or realistic paintings. Example: Nijoujou Ni-no-maru Goten Oohiroma 二条城二の丸御殿大広間 (1624-44), Kyoto.
