gonden 権殿
KEY WORD : architecture / shrines

Also *kariden 仮殿, karidono; utsushidono 移殿. A temporary shrine building which houses a deity or sacred object while the main sanctuary *honden 本殿, is undergoing major repairs. The transferring of the sacred objects to the temporary shrine is called karidono senza 仮殿遷座. In most cases such a structure is dismantled and disposed of when no longer needed. However, for example, at Kamo Wakeikazuchi Jinja 賀茂別雷神社 in Kyoto, the Gonden is a permanent structure set beside the Honden.
