gokakumasu 五角枡

Lit. a five cornered measuring box. A method used to determine the proportions of a bracket arm *hijiki 肘木, and bearing block *to 斗. First, lines are drawn from the top center A of the bracket arm to its lowest corners. These lines are continued to the corners B and C of the bearing block. Next lines CD and BE are drawn. The five apexes, AE, EC, CB, BD and DA are equidistant from each other. A circle is inscribed by connecting these points.
