geki
KEY WORD : art history / sculptures

Also hoko 鉾. A weapon, found as an attribute of fearsome Buddhist figures such as *ten 天, sinshou 神将 and *myouou 明王. The geki originated in ancient China, and has a long handle, often the same height as the figure. It is tipped with a blade combining the functions of a spear-head and an axe. Most versions have a three-pronged blade, and are known as sansageki 三叉戟. An example can be seen on the Jinja Taishou ryuuzou 深沙大将立像 (10-12c) in Myoustuui 明通寺, Fukui prefecture.
