garan-ishi 伽藍石

Also garanseki 伽藍石. Lit. "temple stone." A base stone from a ruined temple used as a "stepping stone" *tobi-ishi 飛石 in a tea garden *roji 露地. It can also be used as a "path dividing stone" *fumiwake-ishi 踏分石 or "peep stone" nozokimi-ishi 覗き見石 by a pond. It is flat, round, and larger than ordinary stepping stones.
