gakumi-ishi 額見石

Lit. plaque-viewing stone. One of the trump stones *yakui-ishi 役石 in the outer portion of a tea garden *uchiroji 内露地. The gakumi-ishi is usually flatter and larger than the other stepping stones *tobi-ishi 飛石, allowing guests to view the plaque containing the name of the tea room *chashitsu 茶室 (see *hengaku 扁額). When the entire garden can be seen from the stone it is called the scenery-viewing stone *monomi-ishi 物見石.
