Also read GAKOU BENRAN. Lit. Handbook on Painters, a late 17c history of Japanese painting attributed to the scholar Arai Hakuseki 新井白石 (1656-1725). Compiled ca. 1680, the work includes biographical information on Japanese painters beginning with Prince Shoutoku (574-622, see *Shoutoku Taishizou 聖徳太子像). The biographical information in GAKOU BINRAN often differs from that in other biographical sources of the late 17c. It is published in Sakazaki Tan 坂崎坦, ed., NIHON GARON TAIKAN 日本画論大観 2: pp.1055-1116.
