futaebei 二重塀

Also called taikobei 太鼓塀 or drum wall. A double castle wall that consisted of two separate walls between which earth, sand and stones were placed. It came into wide use after the introduction of firearms to stop bullets. One example is Ashikaga Yoshiaki's 足利義昭 (1537-97) Nijou Gosho 二条御所 where the double wall was filled with stones.
