fukyoku 布局

Also fuchoku 布置. Composition in Chinese painting. Included in the fifth canon, Plan and Design, Place and Position, of the Six Principles *rikuhou 六法. Composition is determined by the careful placement of motifs and incidental details, the designation of perspective and the overall balance of the painting. This term is also used in China to refer to the concept of a painting in the mind of an artist before it has been worked out concretely on paper.
